School Cottage, Bromham, Bedfordshire
The Grade II listed School Cottage was built in 1861 as a Sunday School for the Bromham Hall estate. The building fell into disuse when the estate was broken down and sold as residential units, and gradually decayed over 25 years until eventually the old school room collapsed.
We were able to stabilise and salvage the two remaining standing structures, leaving a large gap in the middle to be filled with a contemporary interpretation of the original building, being of similar form and volume, and using comparable materials with modern detailing. The original parts of the building were upgraded both structurally and thermally to meet the current regulations.
Details included a cavity drain system within the new wall construction to enable flood proofing during overflows of the neighbouring River Ouse.
The School Cottage now has a variety of uses including concert venue, photographic studio, gallery, studio for visiting artists and guest house, leaving our client wondering how they ever managed without it!
